We just love the 1960′s and to celebrate the Season 5 Premier of Mad Men this weekend, we want to take a look the fabulous 60’s fashion.
Janie Bryant, Emmy award winning costume designer for Mad Men says that the fashion is all about accentuating the “bust, waist, hips.” Of course, this is something we couldn’t help but noticed through out the seasons from all of our favorite Mad Men women characters. What women of the 1960′s understood, is that fitted clothes accentuated their full figured bodies in all of the right places. Another thing to note about the 1960′s fashion was the variety of fabrics, patterns, furs and textures used through out all of the different articles of clothing. Textured fabrics and color blocking were very popular, especially for the shift style dresses.
When using Mad Men as an example, Joan wears many shift dresses that are a bold color and are fitted in all of the right places. Take for example the image below. Here she is wearing a red shift dress that is tightly fitted in the waist and accessorizes with funky gold jewelry that again draws attention to her figure as the necklace falls at the bust accentuating her curves.

Another fashion trend of the 60′s were full-skirted gowns that had close-fitting waists. Betty wears a lot of embroidered evening gowns on her date nights with Don Draper into the city. A common theme with all of these gowns is that they had the fitted waist and full bodied skirt, again to accent the features. Here is an example of Betty and Don after an evening out, where they are both wearing fancy evening attire.

The last trend we want to talk about from the 60′s is the use of fur. While our society has evolved and reconsidered wearing fur, back in the 60′s fur was considered elegant and classy. Additionally, fur trimmings, fur linings, and fur accessories usually of precious leopard, sable, or mink added an element of elegance to any outfit. The fur turban was so popular that it was even sold at low-priced hat bars. Here is a great image of Don Draper and Rachel, from Season 1, who is wearing a fur turban.

It’s always interesting how fashion styles return decades later. Many of the 1960′s fashion we talked about in this post have come back for 2012, for example shift dresses, color blocking and bright bold colors. Not to mention fur and fake fur, which was a hot fashion trend last year, and after Fall NY Fashion week 2012, fur and fake fur accessories are going to be a big part of fall and winter fashion as we saw in many famous designers collections.
Don’t forget, Season 5 Premiers on Sunday, at 9pm EST. Can’t wait to see how all of the characters and fashion evolve in this season!
